Hariharan

An established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music, Hariharan sings for Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu movies.

Hariharan grew up in Mumbai in a Tamil brahmin Iyer family. He has a bachelor’s degree in science and a law degree. His parents, Shrimati Alamelu and H.A.S. Mani (full name: Anantha Subramani Iyer), were renowned Carnatic vocalists. In the beginning, Alamelu was Hariharan’s guru (mentor).

During this time, he developed his skills in Carnatic music. From an early age, he was also exposed to Hindustani music. Hariharan began training in Hindustani music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan in his teen years after being inspired by the songs of Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh. On average, he practiced nine hours a day.

As a ghazal singer, Hariharan dedicated himself to learning Urdu. His Urdu diction is so perfect that even audiences in Lucknow, the language’s heartland, are wowed by it.

He was signed on to sing for the Hindi film Gaman by the late music director Jaidev after winning the All-India Sur Singaar competition in 1977. The song “Ajeeb Saaneha Mujh Par Guzar Gaya Yaaron” in that movie became such a hit that Hariharan was nominated for a Best Singer National Award and won an Uttar Pradesh state award.

Harisharan”s Rise To Fame

Hariharan’s career started out with concert appearances and television appearances. His singing credits include TV serials (e.g., Junoon). Further, he composed most of the scores for several successful ghazal albums.

His first ghazal album with Asha Bhonsle, “Abshaar-e-Ghazal,” went gold in sales. In 1994, Hariharan won a Diva Award for Best Album of the Year for “Gulfam”, another outstanding ghazal album.

In 1992, Hariharan made his film debut when debutant music director A.R. Rahman introduced him with the patriotic song “Thamizha Thamizha” in Maniratnam’s film Roja. He was judged best male playback singer in the 1995 Tamil Nadu State Government Film Awards for his soulful rendition of the song “Uyire Uyire” also by music director A.R. Rahman in Maniratnam’s Bombay (Hariharan sang the song with K.S. Chitra).

Hariharan has been one of the most trusted singers of A.R. Rahman and has sung many songs for him in a long list of movies that include Roja, Minsara Kanavu, Jeans, Indian, Mudhalvan, Taal, Bombay, Rangeela, Indira, Iruvar, Anbe Aaruyire, Kangalal Kaithu Sei, Sivaji, Alaipayuthey, Kannathil Muthamittal, Guru, etc.

In 1998, Hariharan won the national award for the best playback singer foIn Maniratnam’s film Roja, A.R. Rahman introduced him to A.R. Hariharan’s patriotic song “Thamizha Thamizha”.mposed by Anu Malik. He has sung more than 500 Tamil songs which is his highest in his career.

The year 1996 was a career milestone; he released the fusion album ColoniIn Maniratnam’s film Roja, A.R. Rahman introduced him to A.R. Hariharan’s patriotic song “Thamizha Thamizha”.be featured on MTV Unplugged. It won a string of awards including the MTV Indian Viewers’ Choice award.

Hariharan has also acted in a Tamil film with Khushboo, titled Power of Win Maniratnam’s film Roja with the patriotic song “Thamizha Thamizha”.
