Buy Dirt Lyrics – Jordan Davis

Buy Dirt

A few days before he turned 80
He was sittin’ out back in a rocker
He said, “What you been up to lately?”
I told him, “Chasing a dollar”
And in between sips of coffee
He poured this wisdom out
Said, “If you want my two cents on making a dollar count

Buy dirt
Find the one you can’t live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
Add a few limbs to your family tree
And watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard all grow up”

‘Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can’t buy happiness
But you can buy dirt

Before you get caught on that ladder
Let me tell you what it’s all about
Find you a few things that matter
That you can put a fence around
And then he laid it out

Buy dirt
Find the one you can’t live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
And add a few limbs to your family tree
And watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard all grow up

‘Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can’t buy happiness
But you can buy dirt

You can buy dirt
And thank the good Lord for it
‘Cause He ain’t makin’ any more of it

So buy dirt
Find the one you can’t live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
Add a few limbs to your family tree
And watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard all grow up

‘Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can’t buy happiness
But you can buy dirt

About Jordan Davis

With Home State, Jordan Davis went from being a newcomer to a countrywide chart-topper. Informed equally by the old-school songwriters of his parents’ generation and the high-production dynamics of modern country radio, Home State was a once-in-a-decade debut, packed with fresh material that bridged the gap between the classic and the contemporary – including the Number 1 hits “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot,” “Take It From Me,” and “Singles You Up.”

About Life , Career & Family

Jordan’s Shreveport roots contributed to the unique sound he created. Growing up in northern Louisiana, where he was surrounded by songwriters (including his uncle, Stan Paul Davis, who wrote hit songs for Tracy Lawrence during the 1990s), he was surrounded by New Orleans’ jazz clubs, Mississippi’s juke joints, and East Texas’ country saloons, all within a day’s drive. Jordan was surrounded by music everywhere. As he recalls, “I never felt drawn to one specific genre.”. “I always enjoyed writing songs.”. I didn’t care whether a song was folk or southern rock as long as it was well-crafted.”

Jordan is now the one luring people in years later. As a follow-up to his self-titled EP and debut, Home State, Buy Dirt is a record for the modern-day Spotify generation, one whose tastes are broad-ranging, influenced by genre-crossing playlists and the ever-expanding repertoire of contemporary country music. “Drink Had Me” and “Lose You” combine Nashville twang with poppy punch, rooted in a beat that is equal parts honky tonk and dance club. Jordan’s Buy Dirt delivers the same elements that made classic country so great: southern storytelling, timeless melodies, and a blue-collar work ethic.

His favorite artists are those who take risks, he says. My life has changed since I released Home State. We’re all in it together! The year 2020 was a tough one for everyone. That time allowed me to recenter some things in my life, and I didn’t want them to be lost. Something special was what I wanted to create. Writing honestly was the best way to do that, and we did a lot of that on this record.”

Jordan Davis co-wrote Buy Dirt with all-star co-writers such as Hillary Lindsey, Ashley Gorley, Emily Weisband, Josh Kerr, and more during a year when the world was on edge. An election was held. There is a pandemic. There was a period of social unrest and civil unrest. To write uplifting music that celebrates our commonalities rather than our differences, he focused on universal experiences: breakups (“Almost Maybes”), boozy nights (“Drink Had Me”), old flames (“Need To Not”), self-improvement (“Trying”), and long-lasting love (“I Still Smoked”). As a tribute to those who came before him, he also recorded an abbreviated version of John Prine’s “Blow Up Your TV.”

Aside from the record’s title track, “Buy Dirt” features an appearance by Luke Bryan. Additionally, it serves as a focal point. The song “Buy Dirt” is written in the midst of chaos and uncertainty that characterizes Covid-19. As he sips hot coffee with his grandfather on the back porch, the song’s narrator listens to the old man share pearls of wisdom. The story goes even deeper for Davis.

As a result of Covid, he was worried that his career had been destroyed. After a few months, I realized I already had everything I needed – a roof over my head, a beautiful daughter to watch grow up, and an incredible wife. My family, faith, and friends were there for me. As humans, we always want what we don’t have… but it’s good to take a step back and refocus on what’s really important.”
