About Anuradha Paudwal

In India, Anuradha Paudwal is a popular playback singer. Since Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle, she has been one of the leading playback singers. After a string of successes in the Hindi Playback industry, she challenged the monopoly of Mangeshkar singers.

Mumbai (Bombay) is where she studied at Xavier’s College. Arun Paudwal was her husband, and he worked for S. Burman as an assistant. Her career began in 1973 with the movie, Abhimaan (starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan), in which she sang a melodious sloka. “Yashoda” (music by Datta Davjekar) was her Marathi film debut. “Bhav geeten” (non-film Marathi songs) were released by her in 1974.

She made her debut as a playback singer in Hindi films with Kalicharan (starring Shatrugan Sinha and Reena Roy). She made her debut as a soloist in Hema Malini and Shashi Kapoor’s Aap Beeti. This movie’s music-composer duo was Laxmikant-Pyarelal. In addition, she occasionally sang songs for composers Rajesh Roshan (Des Pardes), Jaidev (Dooriyan, Laila Majnu), Kalyanji-Anandji (Kalaakar, Vidhataa), and Usha Khanna (Souten, Sajan Bina Suhagan).

She sang in a number of Marathi movies, including “Disate Majalaa” (Ashtavinayak), “Raja Lalakaari”, and “Kaalyaa Maatita Maatitaa”. Arun, her husband, collaborated with Anil Mohile to form the duo Anil-Arun for most of these movies.

Anuradha’s Career

She stated in an interview that she had never been trained in classical music, stating, “I have never received formal training in classical music. I have tried many times, but it hasn’t worked out for me. I learned a little here and a little there, but ultimately, I just practiced listening to Lataji for a long time.”

Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed her popular numbers for the movie Hero. Her collaboration with Laxmikant Pyarelal produced more success with songs such as “Meri Jung” (O mere Kwabon ke), “Batwara” (Thaare Vaaste Re Dola-Tu maro kaun lage), and “Nagina”. Anuradha received three major hits from Laxmikant Pyarelal in “Ram Lakhan.”. She also sang two good numbers for them in “Tezaab,” “Kehdo ki tum” and “Hum tumko Dilbar Kyon mane.”.

Following this, she collaborated with movie producer Gulshan Kumar and started a string of successful movies, including Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Tezaab, Aashiqui, and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. Many unknown playback singers, such as Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, and Sonu Nigam, were discovered by her and Gulshan Kumar. Arun Paudwal, her husband, was introduced to a new generation of music directors. With T-Seris (Gulshan Kumar’s music label), Nadeem-Shravan, Anu Malik, Nikhil Vinay and Amar Utpal started a new era of melody in Bollywood. As well as duets with southern singers, Anuradha performed beautiful duets with K.J. Yesudas and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.

There have been controversies surrounding Anuradha as well. She was a rare singer in the Bollywood music industry who blossomed under the Mangeshkar sisters’ monopoly. As a result, music directors feared facing the wrath of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle if they worked with her. It was rumored that she was having an affair with Gulshan Kumar after the death of her husband. The Mangeshkar sisters reportedly routinely dubbed the songs of Alka Yagnik in the film “Dil”, also causing controversy. Additionally, she dubs Lata Mangeshkar’s song in “Radha Ka Sangam” claiming that her voice suits the heroine better.

Anuradha announced at her peak that she would sing exclusively for “T-series”, focusing on devotional songs and cover albums. Several Bhajan and promotional videos were made using her attractive and pleasing looks. The first playback singer whose face appeared more on film music covers than its actors was her. After singing for T-series for a while, she took a sabbatical. Her playback career resumed after five years. While she performed a few hit songs for her old music directors, her comeback was not well received.

In spite of significantly cutting back on singing for films, Anuradha has continued to be popular for singing devotional songs and creating devotional albums, which ultimately remain her forte.
