New corona wave hits South Africa

According to the authorities, the fifth corona wave has broken out in South Africa

After the corona situation in South Africa had initially eased, the number of cases has risen rapidly again in recent weeks.

South Africa is currently being hit by a new wave of corona infections. “The fifth wave is here. Take care,” warned the Center for Innovation and Epidemic Response (CERI) on Twitter on Tuesday. The CERI is headed by the virologist Tulio de Oliveira, who became known for discovering the beta and omicron variants.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there have been 5,062 cases, 15 deaths and 83 hospital admissions within 24 hours. The numbers recorded over the past few days are the highest in almost three months, with the sharpest increase occurring in the past two weeks. Health Secretary Joe Phaahla expressed his “concern” last week.

South Africa eased in early April

The country only lifted all corona requirements at the beginning of April. President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a televised address that the country would change how it deals with the pandemic and learn to live with the virus. Between 60 and 80 percent of South Africans have some degree of immunity to the virus through vaccination or previous infections. “This means that we will open our economy even further and resume many of the social and cultural activities that we have missed in the last two years,” said the head of state optimistically.

According to official figures, South Africa is the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent. With a population of nearly 60 million, the country has recorded more than 3.7 million cases and about 100,350 deaths. Less than 45 percent of adults are fully vaccinated. The government has come under pressure from multiple industries to lift coronavirus restrictions blamed for the loss of two million jobs.
