Riptide Lyrics – Vance Joy

Riptide

I was scared of dentists and the dark
I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations
Oh, all my friends are turning green
You’re the magician’s assistant in their dream

Oh, oh-o-oh, and they come unstuck

Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you, when you’re singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong

There’s this movie that I think you’ll like
This guy decides to quit his job and heads to New York City
This cowboy’s running from himself
And she’s been living on the highest shelf

Oh, oh-o-oh, and they come unstuck

Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you’re singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong

I just wanna, I just wanna know
If you’re gonna, if you’re gonna stay
I just gotta, I just gotta know
I can’t have it, I can’t have it, any other way
I swear she’s destined for the screen
Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you’ve ever seen, oh

Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you, when you’re singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong

Oh lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you’re singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong

Oh lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you’re singing that song and
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong, yeah
I got a lump in my throat ’cause
You’re gonna sing the words wrong

A mega US tour followed the success of the album, and the song remains one of the best singles to come out of Australia in recent years, cementing Vance’s global reputation.

On 1st December 1987, Vance Joy was born in Melbourne, Australia, into a middle class family. Like every kid, he was also into sports, and it wasn’t until his teenage years that he felt the desire to play music. In order to develop an interest in music, he started listening to heavy metal songs, particularly those by Metallica.

The prospect of making a career in music proved more difficult than learning to play guitar, so he instead focused on his second best interest, football. While he was in high school, Joy was the school captain and was pursuing a career in basketball.

As soon as he graduated from high school, he enrolled at Monash University and earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws degree. It was at this time that the idea of making a career in music began to take root in his mind. When he began singing in local bars and clubs, he received some positive feedback, which further motivated him to create good music. Additionally, he attended open mic events in clubs, bars, and cafes in order to make a name for himself. There was a time when he was a known figure in the Melbourne open mic scene.

Besides Australian Rules Football, he also played in the Victorian Football League for the Coburg Football Club and won the best player award in 2008 for his outstanding performance. Despite his success as a musician, he continued to support his football club.
