About Anup jalota

Early life

Anup Jalota hails from the Sham Chowrasi Gharana of Punjab and was born in Nainital, Uttarakhand to Purushottam Das Jalota, a renowned exponent of bhajan. Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was the place where he was educated. The couple divorced and Sonali Jalota married Roop Kumar Rathod, Anup Jalota’s closest friend and tabla player. The brother of Anup Jalota, Ajay Jalota, currently resides in California. One of his older brothers is Anil Jalota, while his two sisters are Anjali Dhir and Anita Mehra.

Career

It was in All India Radio that Jalota began his musical career as a chorus singer. Santoor, dholak, sarod, sarangi, violinist, sitar, tabla, and guitarist usually accompany him. Among his most popular bhajans are Aisi Lagi Lagan, Main Nahi Makhan Khayo, Rang De Chunariya, Jag Me Sundar Hai Do Naam, and Chadariya Jhini Re Jhini.

There are eight languages he can sing in. Besides bhajans, he has recorded over 1,500 ghazals and songs. Over 5,000 live concerts have been performed in over 400 cities across five continents. Bhajans and ghazals have been a part of his repertoire for over 30 years.
